Summer Habits

Wow, it's been a while, huh? I've been learning that we are all creatures of habit. I've realized that I go through stages. For example, these days I'm in my "Korean Drama" stage. This is a DANGEROUS stage to be in. Why do they make it so that you are left with a cliffhanger at the end of each episode??? When am I supposed to go to sleep??? The strange thing is that I mock these dramas, in a way, cuz many of them are so similar, and yet I can't stop myself from watching them! :)

So, in honor of Korean Dramas, here are my "Top 10 Things Found in a K Drama":
1. It's always raining. They're always running or crying or running while crying in the rain.
2. There's always a 'pojangmacha'/drunken soju scene.
3. They are always meeting in 'cah pehs'(cafes) yet not really telling each other what they want to say, always beating around the bush.
4. There's always a great HUGGING scene. I've realized that they're trying to be a bit more risque and are actually kissing(!) but I've also realized that these scenes are not that great, the camera is always spinning! :)
5. There's always a recurring musical theme song that gets both addictive and annoying.
6.  There is a strong emphasis on 'chut sarang'(First love).
7.  Rich girl/poor boy with disapproving parents or rich boy/poor girl with disapproving parents.
8.  Most female main characters' names are something like: Yujin, or Haewon, or Jiyun. What I refer to as the "cutesy" names.
9. Written into many scripts: As an encouragement, they say to one other "Aja, Aja, pai-ting!" (Fighting!)
10. You laugh, you cry, you cry, you cry.

Do you agree? Any to add? I've gotta go now, must watch another episode! :)

random thoughts

i found a new love- bike riding! it's silly really- me and all the little kiddies riding around the nearby park, but i really enjoy it! i've been wanting one for a while and finally got one that was on sale at my favorite store: target, baby! thanks to KT for letting me know that they were having a huge sale! but just to show that i'm really getting old: my butt hurts after each ride! i think i need to purchase one of those soft shock-absorbing bike seats, sad huh?

well, i think it was made clear to me this past week that i may never teach Second Grade at my school. for those of you who know me, i really wanted to teach second grade. i won't explain the difference to you non-educators, but trust me- there's a difference. the teacher who's job i've been watching like a hawk for years hoping she would retire, is finally retiring this year. one problem: we've already determined our classes for next year and that second grade class will be the ones with my current Special Education students. i'm finally done with this year, it was a HARD YEAR!!! and if i ask for the second grade position, i'd be getting these kids AGAIN!!! i don't think i can handle it again...i struggled with this for a few days...but this is what i've decided:  i'm keeping my mouth shut, losing a rare opportunity and am just settling down to the fact that i may FOREVER be a First Grade Teacher...i think this can tell you how much i don't want to have these kids again! but we'll see...i'm starting to feel that itch to try something new...what do you think of Assistant Principal Susan Kim? How does that sound? :) I'm considering it...but that would mean going back to school and i vowed that i'd never go back into the classroom, unless i was teaching in front of it!

7 days left! i think i'm more excited for this school year to end than my kids are!

my bird, tweetie, is MOLTING! he's spending most of his time in my classroom these days cuz i'm tired of bringing him home every weekend. his feathers are flying all over the place! it's getting really annoying. my friend, kathy, found out that i should try to give him more protein by giving him a hard boiled egg because he needs it during molting. now, he's a bird...and i'm trying to feed him a bird egg...sounds a bit cannibalistic to me, but whatever...but, he's not eating it. slightly worried. don't worry, i'm not that attached to it, he's cute but still can be annoying. i've already found him a place to stay for the summer so i don't have to watch him! i know, i know, horrible right? but i don't think i'm as much of an animal-lover as i previously thought. maybe i only like dogs, who knows?

okay, enough random and LONG thoughts! hope you have a nice day after you read my rambling!

Kids These Days!

It's amazing to me- how kids are so different now than when I was growing up. I think it just reveals my age...I remember the days when Cabbage Patch Kids and My Little Pony were the only things I knew...But no, not kids these days...It's scary... I teach First Grade...Usually when I tell that to someone I just met, I get a response something along the lines of "Oh, so cute!" And I usually respond with a "No, they are not THAT cute."

Okay, so I've been doing this teaching thing for 9 years now...by this time, I feel pretty comfortable with what I'm doing. So why is it that I work my butt off to teach kids how to read, add 2 digit numbers, tell time, count coins and I get almost no response from some kids? AND YET, if they hear ONE LINE from a song on KISS FM... "To the left, To the left..." They can REPEAT THE ENTIRE SONG AND DANCE VERY PROVOCATIVELY to it???  It would be cute if it wasn't so sad...This is the reality...I have kids who can't tell me the what the letter "U" sounds like but they can tell me who Fergie, JT and 50-Cent are and recite all their lyrics! Especially the ones that basically say things that 6-year-olds should not be saying...

Teachers- Does this break your hearts as much as it does mine? Everyday I'm reminded that this is my mission-field...No matter how many stinking photocopies I have to make, no matter how many times I have to repeat the same classroom rules over and over again, no matter how many times I have to tell the same kids to sit down, no matter how many shoelaces I have to tie(Although I don't do it as much anymore-I tell them that it's their extra credit homework and when they show me they can do it, they get a lollipop! I'm not above bribery!)... No matter how tiring things get, I'm grateful to Him for bringing me to this place. I'm almost (ALMOST!) sad I only have 18 days left.

Where Does Postage Money Go?

Okay, so I just went to the post office to return a package. The clerk asked me the usual question at the end of the transaction: "Do you need any stamps?" As always, I politely answered, "Oh, no thank you, I already have some." After which she informs me, "Starting Monday, the stamp price goes up to 41 cents. Do you need any 2 cents stamps?" This is when I go, "What??? Didn't the price of stamps JUST go up?" She politely but-oh-so-obviously-thinking-"I don't care" said, "Yes." What the heck? Why does it cost so stinking much for a stamp now? At the risk of revealing my age, I remember the days when it was just a quarter! Where does stamp money go and why does the price keep going up? Is it aligned with gas prices??? So, by the time I left the post office, I spent $45.75 for the cost of returning my package, for 2-cent stamps and for a roll of 41-cent stamps. THIS STINKS!

Don't Buy Your Kids A Drum Set!

Okay, so a lot of my friends and people I know either have babies or are planning to have one-five(!) soon. Here's one piece of advice- DO NOT BUY YOUR BABY THESE THINGS: 1. A drum set or 2. A 10-pin bowling set. Why? Because I live under a young couple and their 2 year old daughter and she has both of these things. It's HORRIBLE! Right now, the little "darling" is banging on the drum and it's LOUD! It's bad enough that she cries ALL THE TIME, but now they gave her something to vent her frustration on. And it literally vibrates down to my floors! CRAZY! And there are times when I hear a ball roll across the floor and then...CRASH!, pins start falling down!  IT DRIVES ME INSANE!!! So, unless you live in a sound-proof house, please, please do not purchase these items for your children. Here are some suggestions for multi-unit friendly items to purchase instead: 1. A bag of cotton balls. 2. Marshmallows.
3. Pillows.  4. Shoes with extra padding. AHHH, sounds great!  Your neighbors will thank you! :)
